How to Create Beautiful Line Art Using Midjourney
Line art has a unique simplicity and beauty. These creations feel honest and direct. I find the minimal nature of line art refreshing. It’s amazing how much can be conveyed with just a few well-placed lines.
For those who might not know, line art is a style of drawing that uses just lines, without shading or complex colors, to represent an image. The lines can vary in thickness, but they are always distinct and noticeable. It’s the kind of art that looks effortless but often takes real skill to perfect.
Now, I’m not a traditional artist. I’ve always appreciated art, but I’ve never been great at creating it myself. That’s where tools like Midjourney come in. With AI art generators, anyone, including me, can create beautiful artwork.
Create a Base Prompt for Midjourney
Midjourney works by turning text prompts into images. The better your prompt, the better the image will be. For line art, I’ve found a simple base prompt that works well.
Here it is:
Simple line drawing of [subject with details], cute, pastel colors, white background.
Let’s break this down:
- “Simple line drawing”: This tells Midjourney the style of art you want. You’re not after a realistic image or a painting. You want a line drawing.
- “of [subject with details]”: This is where you describe what you want in your image. Be specific. The more details you give, the better Midjourney will understand your vision.
- “cute”: This adds a particular style to your line art. It suggests a softer, more charming aesthetic. You can change this to fit the mood you’re after.
- “pastel colors”: This sets the color palette. Pastel colors are soft and light. This is optional, but I find it works well with the “cute” style.
- “white background”: This keeps the focus on the line art itself. A plain background makes the drawing stand out.
20 Example Prompts
Here are some examples of prompts I’ve used, based on the format I’ve outlined:
- Simple line drawing of women cheering, cute, pastel colors, white background. –ar 3:4
- Simple line drawing of a palm tree at sunset, cute, pastel colors, white background. –ar 3:4

You’ll notice I’ve added “–ar 3:4” at the end of each prompt. This sets the aspect ratio of the image. In this case, it’s a 3:4 ratio, which is good for portrait-style images.
How to Improve These Prompts
These prompts are a good start, but there’s always room for improvement. Here are some ways to make them even better:
- Add More Details: The more specific you are, the better. For example, instead of “a palm tree at sunset,” you could say “a tall, thin palm tree with coconuts, at sunset with an orange and pink sky.”
- Specify the Line Style: You can guide Midjourney by describing the kind of lines you want. Try phrases like “thin, delicate lines,” “bold, thick lines,” or “flowing, curved lines.”
- Change the Mood: Instead of “cute,” you could use words like “whimsical,” “serious,” “dynamic,” or “minimalist” to change the overall feel of the image.
- Play with Colors: While I suggested pastel colors, you’re not limited to them. You could say “bright, vibrant colors,” “monochromatic,” or even “black and white.”
- Add Artistic References: If you have a specific artist or art style in mind, mention it. For example, “in the style of Keith Haring” or “inspired by Matisse cut-outs.”
Here are a few examples of how I’ve improved on the original prompts:
- Instead of: “Simple line drawing of women cheering, cute, pastel colors, white background. –ar 3:4″Try: “Simple line drawing of three women cheering with confetti falling around them, thin and delicate lines, cute, pastel colors, white background. –ar 3:4”
- Instead of: “Simple line drawing of a palm tree at sunset, cute, pastel colors, white background. –ar 3:4″Try: “Simple line drawing of a lone palm tree on a small island, sunset with purple and yellow sky, bold, flowing lines, cute, bright, vibrant colors, white background. –ar 3:4”
- Instead of: “Simple line drawing of a cupcake with sprinkles, cute, pastel colors, white background. –ar 3:4″Try: “Simple line drawing of a large cupcake with rainbow sprinkles and a cherry on top, thick lines, cute, monochromatic pink, white background. –ar 3:4”
I’ve found that playing around with prompts is the most enjoyable part of using Midjourney. Each change, big or small, can lead to a completely different image. It’s a process of trial and error, and that’s okay.
I encourage you to take these prompts and make them your own. Try different combinations, add your own flair, and see what you come up with. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. It’s all about finding what works for you and creating something you love.
Creating art with Midjourney, especially line art, has been a fun experience for me. I hope this post helps you. Have fun experimenting, and I’m excited to see what you create!
