ChatGPT Prompts for Retro 90s Anime Style Images
There’s a specific look to anime from the 90s that newer shows never quite replicate. Flat cel shading with hard shadow edges, slightly faded colors, visible film grain, and hand painted backgrounds that feel warm instead of clean.
ChatGPT can produce that look surprisingly well, but only if you describe the technique instead of naming a show or a studio. Ask for a specific series and you’ll usually get a refusal. Ask for “1990s cel animation with hard shadow blocks and VHS color” and it gives you exactly what you wanted.
To use these, open chatgpt.com or the ChatGPT app, start a new chat, and paste the prompt in. If you want your own face in the result, upload a clear, well lit photo first and then paste the prompt.
Here are 10 prompts I’ve tested that hold up.
1. Girl on a Quiet Sunset Street
This is the shot that defines the era for most people. Empty residential street, low sun, one character walking home.
Create a 1990s cel animation style anime illustration of a teenage girl walking home along a quiet residential street. She is mid stride with her school bag slung over one shoulder and her free hand tucked into her cardigan pocket, head turned slightly to look at the sky. She wears a navy sailor style school uniform with a white collar, a beige cardigan, and white ankle socks with brown loafers. Her hair is shoulder length with a single sheen highlight running through it. The camera sits at eye level from a slight distance, framing her small against the street. Warm low sun casts long hard edged shadows across the pavement. The background is a hand painted row of low Japanese houses with telephone poles and overhead wires. Use flat cel shading with no gradients, a muted orange and dusty teal palette, visible film grain, and crisp ink outlines. Use aspect ratio 4:5.

2. Boy Looking Out a Train Window
The train scene is a 90s staple. Half the mood comes from the reflection in the glass.
Create a 1990s retro anime illustration of a teenage boy sitting alone on a commuter train, resting his chin on his hand with his elbow propped against the window ledge. He wears a black gakuran school jacket with the collar slightly open and a plain white shirt underneath. His hair is dark and slightly messy with one thick highlight stripe. The camera is positioned at eye level from the seat across the aisle, showing him in three quarter profile. Cool overhead fluorescent light mixes with warm evening light coming through the window. The background outside the glass is a blurred hand painted suburb passing by at dusk, with his faint reflection visible in the pane. Use hard edged cel shading, a desaturated blue and amber palette, subtle analog film grain, and thin sharp linework. Use aspect ratio 4:5.

3. Rainy Night Street With an Umbrella
Wet asphalt and reflected signage. This one prints well as a wallpaper.
Create a 1990s hand painted anime scene of a young woman standing under a clear umbrella on a rain soaked city street at night. She holds the umbrella handle with both hands close to her chest and looks slightly downward with a calm expression. She wears a long tan trench coat over a dark turtleneck, with a red scarf and black boots. The camera is at a low angle from across the street, catching the reflections on the wet pavement in the foreground. Light comes from glowing shop signs and a single streetlamp overhead. The background is a narrow street of small storefronts with hand painted Japanese signage and rain streaks across the frame. Use flat cel shading, deep navy and warm neon red tones, heavy film grain, and soft glow around every light source. Use aspect ratio 9:16.

4. Rooftop Lunch Break
Chain link fence, water tower, blue sky. Simple setup that reads as 90s instantly.
Create a 1990s cel animated anime illustration of two students eating lunch on a school rooftop. One sits cross legged against a chain link fence holding a bento box on her lap, while the other lies back on the concrete with hands behind his head. She wears a summer sailor uniform with short sleeves, he wears a white school shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the top button undone. The camera is at ground level looking slightly up, with the fence and open sky filling most of the frame. Bright midday sun creates strong flat shadows with sharp edges. The background is a hand painted rooftop with a water tank, a rusted door, and distant apartment blocks. Use a bright but slightly faded palette of sky blue and warm concrete gray, flat cel colors, and visible grain. Use aspect ratio 16:9.

5. Convenience Store at Night
Fluorescent light against a dark street. This is one of the most recognizable 90s frames there is.
Create a 1990s anime style illustration of a young man standing outside a small convenience store late at night, leaning against the outer wall with one foot propped up behind him and a canned drink in his hand. He wears an oversized bomber jacket over a plain t shirt, loose jeans, and worn sneakers. His head is tilted back slightly against the wall with a tired, relaxed expression. The camera is at eye level from a few steps away, showing the storefront glass beside him. Harsh white fluorescent light spills out from inside and pools on the ground. The background is a hand painted shop window with stacked shelves visible inside, a bicycle parked nearby, and a dark empty street beyond. Use flat cel shading with hard shadow blocks, a cold white and deep green palette, and heavy analog film grain. Use aspect ratio 4:5.

6. Summer Festival Evening
Lanterns, yukata, warm crowd bokeh. Reliably one of the highest saving rates on Pinterest.
Create a 1990s hand painted anime scene of a couple walking together through a summer festival at night. She holds a candied apple in one hand and lightly grips his sleeve with the other, glancing up at him mid laugh. She wears a pale blue yukata with a white floral pattern and a red obi, hair pinned up with a small flower clip. He wears a dark gray yukata with a simple pattern and wooden sandals. The camera is at chest height from behind and slightly to the side, following them into the crowd. Warm light comes from rows of paper lanterns strung overhead. The background is a hand painted row of festival stalls with soft crowd silhouettes and a dark blue sky. Use flat cel colors, warm gold and deep indigo tones, gentle grain, and glowing halos around each lantern. Use aspect ratio 4:5.

7. Bedroom Window and a Cat
Quiet interior scenes were everywhere in 90s shows and they still perform well as phone wallpapers.
Create a 1990s retro anime illustration of a girl sitting on the floor of her bedroom with her back against the bed, knees pulled up, holding an open book she isn’t reading. A cat is curled asleep on the windowsill beside her. She wears an oversized cream sweater and shorts with mismatched socks, and her long hair is loosely tied to one side. The camera is at floor level looking slightly up at her. Soft late afternoon light comes through sheer curtains and lands in hard edged patches on the floor. The background is a hand painted bedroom with a cluttered desk, a cassette player, taped up posters, and a small potted plant. Use flat cel shading, a warm cream and dusty rose palette, visible film grain, and thin clean outlines. Use aspect ratio 1:1.

8. Apartment Balcony Over the City
Wide skyline shot with a small figure. The background does most of the work here.
Create a 1990s cel animation style anime scene of a woman standing on a small apartment balcony at dusk, forearms resting on the railing as she looks out over the city. She wears a loose white button up shirt over black shorts, sleeves rolled to the elbow, hair down and moving slightly in the wind. The camera is placed behind her at shoulder height, framing her from the back with the skyline filling the rest of the shot. Fading light comes from a low sun behind the buildings, backlighting her outline. The background is a hand painted city of dense low rise buildings, water towers, and scattered lit windows under a gradient sky. Use flat cel colors, a purple to orange dusk palette, heavy grain, and soft bloom around the sun. Use aspect ratio 16:9.

9. Retro Diner Booth
A slightly Americanized 90s anime look. Good variation if you want something that stands apart from the school scenes.
Create a 1990s anime style illustration of a young woman sitting alone in a corner booth of a retro diner, one arm draped along the back of the seat and the other stirring a tall milkshake with a straw. She wears a cropped red baseball jacket over a white tank top, high waisted jeans, and small gold hoop earrings. Her hair is styled in a high ponytail with soft bangs. The camera is at table height from the opposite seat, framing her slightly off center. Warm light comes from a hanging pendant lamp above the table with cooler neon spill from the window. The background is a hand painted diner interior with checkered flooring, chrome trim, and a rain streaked window showing a dark parking lot. Use hard edged cel shading, a red, cream and teal palette, and strong analog film grain. Use aspect ratio 4:5.

10. Your Own Photo as a 90s Anime Frame
Upload a clear photo of yourself first, then paste this. It keeps your features while applying the era styling.
Create a 1990s cel animation style anime portrait based on the uploaded photo. Keep the facial structure, hairstyle, and outfit recognizable, but render everything in period accurate style: larger eyes with simple iris shading and a single highlight, a sharper chin, a small mouth, and hair drawn in solid blocks with one clean sheen stripe. Pose the subject at a slight three quarter turn with the shoulders angled and a calm, neutral expression. The camera is at eye level in a medium close up. Light comes warm and directional from the left, creating one hard edged shadow block across the face and neck. Place a hand painted background of a quiet street at golden hour behind the subject, softly out of focus. Use flat cel colors with no gradients, a faded VHS palette of warm oranges and muted teals, visible film grain, subtle horizontal scanlines, and crisp ink outlines. Use aspect ratio 4:5.

The three phrases doing the heaviest lifting across all of these are “flat cel shading with no gradients,” “hand painted background,” and “film grain.” Drop any one of them and the output starts drifting back toward a modern digital anime look.
If your image comes out too clean or too glossy, add “slightly faded colors, print imperfections, 4:3 broadcast look” to the end of the prompt and run it again.
And if ChatGPT refuses a prompt, check whether you added a show or studio name somewhere. Describing the technique gets you the same result without the block.
Try a few of these and see which ones match the look you’re after. The street and train scenes are the easiest starting points if you’re new to this style.
